USW Local Union #6787 Is The First Organization To Donate To This Year’s Paws-n-Pints 2023

The executive board of the United Steel Workers Local Union Post No. 6787 recommended – and the attending union members – voted on Thursday to donate $100 to the 2nd annual Paws-n-Pints 2023 event. This event is sponsored by Michael Hutchins and his rescue dog Matty with all proceeds to benefit the Humane Society of Hobart, Inc. Michael is a local real estate broker with Listing Leaders Advantage out of Hobart, IN specializing in credit repair and representing buyers and sellers since 2016. He is a product of NWI having graduating from Portage in 2004. He attended Wabash College and subsequently attaining his Juris Doctor (JD) from Western Michigan Law School in 2013.

“This is a great event dedicated to celebrating rescue dogs – and all animals – which allows for me to also pay special tribute to my own rescue Matty” says Mr. Hutchins. The first event was held in 2019 which saw nearly a couple hundred visitors. Unfortunately, like many events, COVID halted organizing the 2nd annual event…until this year!

USW No. 6787 is the first organization to officially pledge a donation to this year’s event. A member of USW No. 6787`s executive board recently stated “we recommended the voting members to support this event because we believe in this cause.” That is, to celebrate rescue dogs – and all rescue animals – while while advocating for members of the community to consider adopting an animal of their own. When asked why he is so passionate about this cause, Mr. Hutchins responded “I always grew up with a family dog from early childhood thru my college years. But my life was forever changed for the better after adopting Matty in 2016. He has unequivocally impacted my life and the lives of so many people he has encountered over the past seven years in such a positive manner. I would not be the same without him!”

Mr. Hutchins adopted Matty in August 2016 from the Hobart Humane Society as he and his mother were searching for a dog for his grandparents (who had recently lost their dog of 16 years). “My mom had called and told me that I needed to check this little dog out. After I had arrived at the Humane Society, I was introduced to this small creature resembling more of a matted cotton ball than that of a dog” he excitedly recalls while reminiscing about their first interaction. “Despite the chaos of others dogs loudly barking and demonstrating noticeably high stress behaviors, Matty quietly gazed into my eyes and gently placed his paw on his cage as if to say ‘I’ve been waiting for you buddy…now get me the heck out of here.'” And the rest is history!

Matty & Mike have worked alongside over 100 clients in helping to PUT A NEW WOOF OVER THEIR HEADS! When asked “why Quaker Steak & Lube to host this event?” He replies “it is simple: the staff and crew have treated Matty with such genuine love the last seven years. They get SO much excited about seeing him than me whenever we arrive to enjoy great food, drinks and comraderie with our Lube Crew. So it is a no brainer for me to celebrate Matty at The Lube!”

Mike & Matty urge members of the community to join in this annual celebration of rescue dogs (and all animals). The Hobart Humane Society will have dogs on site that will be available for adoption. And who knows, you very well may meet your very own dog that could have as profound an impact as Matty has on Michael Hutchins.

SATURDAY, MAY 27th, 2023 from Noon-6PM at the Quaker Steak & Lube (Portage, IN).
